Therapydia peal ridge physical therapist Morgan Semmel PT, DPT

Get to know Therapydia Pearlridge’s newest physical therapist, Morgan Semmel PT, DPT as she shares what surprised her the most about PT, her Saturday morning routine and her favorite way to stay active.

There are so many ways to be active, find what works for you!

When did you know that you wanted to be a physical therapist?

I played basketball for 12 years and found myself as a PT patient multiple times growing up, so I was familiar with the profession. I always said I wanted to be a teacher or a personal trainer and my dad actually suggested pursuing PT as a way to combine those two professions: teaching and training people how to move their bodies more efficiently.

What’s your favorite song to get you motivated?

Come Alive from The Greatest Showman.

What is the biggest challenge involved in being a PT?

Encouraging patients to have the perspective to achieve long-term goals and that there isn’t a “quick fix” that leads to lasting results.

How do you like to stay active?

I like to switch it up between strength training, HIIT, and running. Variety helps to keep me interested / motivated. I just moved to the island and want to learn how to surf!

What surprised you the most about the physical therapist profession?

All of the niche areas of specialty care that exist. Even when starting PT school, I didn’t know all the areas of healthcare that physical therapists could work in such as oncology or wound care.

Are you currently pursuing any further education/certifications?

Not currently, but I am interested in taking courses to better serve vestibular and postpartum patients.

What’s your go-to breakfast?

Omelette & avocado toast

What do you wish everyone knew about physical therapy?

I wish that more people knew the education required of physical therapists and all the unique interventions we can provide patients.

What is the most important personality trait that a therapist must have?

Being an effective communicator.  We have to be able to share knowledge in a way that is easily understood and motivates patients.

What do you do to de-stress/unwind?

Talking with friends and family, reading a novel, and going to the beach.

Finish this sentence: On Saturday mornings, you can usually find me…

At a coffee shop or the beach!

What is your favorite piece of wellness advice to offer?

Find a way to be active that you enjoy and do that as long as you enjoy it. There is no one size fits all exercise plan or diet and I often think people get discouraged or give up on pursuing a healthier lifestyle because they think it has to look a certain way. Not everyone is going to be a runner or powerlifter.  There are so many ways to be active, find what works for you!
